Sometimes I’m just embarrassed to be a human.

What part of your brain could possibly make you think THIS was a good idea?

I am very fortunate to have been able to experience Stonehenge in person. I was actually even able to go on an after hours tour and touch the stones; an experience that I will cherish for the rest of my days. So I speak from experience when I say: how can you not respect this amazing place? How can you not be completely humbled by this beautiful monument?

I just don’t get it.

Clarification

You know, I feel like I should clarify my WTF post from yesterday.

I guess I was trying to be polite. I am also not trying to give too much information about the incident that happened this week because I work in a very public place. But sometimes I just feel like I want to vent and frankly that is part of the reason I blog.

There is a lot of negative energy where I work. It’s seriously… bad for your soul. I’m not talking puts you in a bad mood, or makes you grumpy… I’m talking bad for your soul.

The person I was referring to when I spoke of the person who was being mean and evil, wasn’t just being bitchy. If you are being bitchy? …I can deal.

But if you are being evil? That’s just not right.

I’ve been a manager for several years (even tho’ I am not any longer). I think I have pretty tough skin. I guess it just makes me SAD when people are evil intentionally. Even more so when people are that way to people they don’t even know. When you base your evilness on rumors or speculation. It’s just senseless to me.

I know… why don’t you spend half the time you spend spreading rumors and speculation and spend that time getting to know the person you are evil to. You might get a surprise.

But you know, I can’t change some circumstances, I just have to deal. So, now what I do… every night when I walk out the door of work, I make it point to look directly at the garbage can (it literally sits 1 foot from the front door). I look at that can and leave all this heavy bullshit behind.

Nikki – your kind of bitchy doesn’t scare me. Embrace it, you may need it someday. LOL
Steph – when you go back to work, you will be fine. It’s the commute that worries me. LOL

WTF Wednesday

WTF Wednesday as stolen from my buddy Rhonda.

I’m driving from work to pick up the Bug and I hear the beginnings of Janet Jackson’s Black Cat. Cool! I’m thinking, I haven’t hear the song in awhile I can jam out (Bug’s not in the car yet).

I’m listening to XM satellite radio, if anyone cares. Normally, I’m a Siruis person, but XM came for a few months free in my new lease vehicle.

So, I’m jamming… waiting for Janet to start singing…

The singing NEVER starts. WTF. Oh and as a side note, without the lyrics, Black Cat sounds like a guitar and a cow bell. It was very hard to listen too… but I kept thinking the singing would surely start any minute now.

Why do people who don’t even know you, but work at the same place try to intentionally be mean or evil or just plain try to make you feel uncomfortable around them? And then, not 2 minutes later, use those same lips to say how you know God will take care of you? WTF.

Do you think intentionally being a bitch to someone is acceptable behavior in God’s eyes? Because if you do, I sure hope we believe in two different Gods.

Election Day in Michigan

Yes, I have voted already. I took my 19 month old son with me and explained everything as I was doing it. He liked the fire trucks best (I vote at the local fire house). I want him to have memories of going with his parents to vote. I remember going with my Mom. In fact, my Mom is working as an election worker today. I want voting to be a family tradition we carry on.

My husband and I spent quite a bit of time last night researching candidates and where they stand on important issues to us. We took a “candidate quiz” over at the Washington Post. Obama came up as the Democratic candidate that matched our views the closest. Too bad he took his name off the ballot, here’s two votes he won’t get.

So then I started looking the Republicans. GAH!

A women’s right to choose is a huge issue for me and it’s one I always look at someone’s stance on. As you can see, every republican, except Ron Paul, thinks Roe v. Wade should be repealed. Nice.

I have listed quotes from each candidate’s list of issues and provided a link so you can see for yourself.

Giuliani
* Would probably not sign federal ban on all abortions. (Nov 2007)
* Ok to repeal Roe v. Wade, but ok to view it as precedent too. (May 2007)
Probably? Probably? This is a strong issue to say probably too, don’t you think Rudy? Maybe the “uncommitted” selection means Rudy.

Huckabee

* Overturn Roe v. Wade, but keep incest & rape exceptions. (Jan 2000)

Paul

Ron Paul thinks the government should be out of the abortion decision, but he also thinks it’s not appropriate to prosecute all illegal adult porn… huh? I’m not even sure I know what that means. He seemed a bit “take the government out of the government” to me, if that makes any sense.

Doesn’t matter, he took his name off the ballot, but for those keeping score.

If you are curious, I voted for Hillary. Her views matched mine closer than any other candidate ON THE BALLOT. I don’t know how my hubby is going to vote and even if I did, it’s not my right to reveal it here.

Frankly, this little exercise scared the shit out of me. My body, my choice. Period. It doesn’t matter if we are talking about abortion, organ donation or pulling the plug on my brain dead body. My body, my choice.

If you are willing to take that away from me, there is no telling what you would do.

Don’t even get me started on the war for oil in Iraq.

Please exercise your right to vote.

Michigan – What a disaster. You know the economy around here is for shit. The job-market sucks and our homes are loosing their value. Then our lawmakers decide to move the Michigan primary up without regard to how it will effect the delegates (our delegates may not even get counted). And more importantly, without regard to what the voters want (no one asked me for my opinion or to vote on the issue).

Even before the bill (to move up the primary) was signed, parties threatened not to campaign in Michigan. So let me get this straight… our lawmakers decide to change dates around and the presidential candidates think its okay to not come and share their views in Michigan and in some cases not even put their name on the ballot.

Let’s make this clear: Candidates who are not on the Michigan Primary Ballot TOOK THEIR NAMES OFF INTENTIONALLY. How do you expect to get voted for, if you are not on the ballot?

Now the big push here in Michigan is to vote “Uncommitted”. Huh? What? What’s the point? It’s like signing the proxy thing that comes in your AAA Insurance notice every year. Like saying “I’m not going to use my vote – here you decide who I should vote for.”

Isn’t the whole point of voting electing a person who shares you views closest so you will be well represented in whatever you have elected this person to do.

How does uncommitted give you that voice? Do you know who the delegates are? Do you know how those “uncommitted” delegates are going to vote? Do you realize that you have no CONTROL over who the uncommitted delegates vote for? They could very well vote for someone that was on the ballot.

Dodd, Edwards and Obama CHOSE TO HAVE THEIR NAMES REMOVED FROM THE MICHIGAN BALLOT. Do you really want these people running your country when they can’t even be bothered to give you the opportunity to vote for them? It’s either very arrogant or very stupid… either way, I think we’ve had enough of both for the last 7 years.

I don’t think this situation is good by any means. But I will tell you that it certainly has had me on the Internet researching how this whole election process works (I think they covered this on Senior Skip Day when I was in high school). And that’s probably the only good that has come of it. I am nervous, I’ll admit that. NO WHERE on the Internet could I find, how uncommitted delegates were issued. So I still don’t understand this aspect of it. And for that reason alone, I won’t vote uncommitted.

I honestly haven’t decided how I am going to vote, or if I am going to vote Democratic, as I am registered. Historically I have preferred Democratic candidates and I certainly didn’t vote for our current mad man George W. But I just haven’t decided what is the best way for my views to be represented in Washington.

I don’t understand why some states vote first and some states have to vote later. You know around here the local news will not call a candidate as winning a race while the polls are still open. They are afraid it will sway peoples votes; making people not vote (why bother?) if they were going to vote for the projected loser or not vote if their candidate is winning (cool, he’s winning, I don’t need to vote). Isn’t this what staggering the Primaries does for the rest of the country? Why can’t we all just vote on the same fucking day?

The most humorous part to me… or maybe it’s the saddest. We are acting like some democratic superpower out in the world. We want all countries to have the ability to elect a ruler fairly and without brutality. And look at our own mess. People in glass houses really shouldn’t throw stones.

I’m home today. Hunter was up for quite a while last night coughing. He doesn’t have a fever, but he is congested and his nose is kinda runny. He’s at that age where he HATES to have his nose wiped. He’d rather have that crap sit on his upper lip until the end of time, as opposed to have someone wipe it with a tissue.

I figured it was better to keep him home from daycare today. One, I don’t want him to get any sicker and two, if he’s coughing – everyone could get sick – if he is sick, that is.

He’s not acting sick, his energy level is normal, which I guess is good. It could just be the drastic change in weather that is causing his nasally distress.

The weather is windy, cold and drizzly – yuck. You know the kind where you would rather stay under the covers all day – unless of course you are almost 17 months old.

So I decided to keep him home today and I called in sick at work.

Ok, so it’s 1:30 in the morning and Kev and I are both up because Hunter has been coughing for a while. I give Hunter a drink of water and bring him over to the rocking chair to try and get him back to sleep and Kev is setting up the humidifier. After the humidifier is done, he goes and gets the ‘Lil Colds Decongestant Plus Cough” for stuffy noses and coughing (duh). It’s a bottle from last year – when we used it without incident.

Now before you go on some tangent about me using a recalled product, do me a favor: just stop yourself.

On October 18-19, two advisory committees of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gathered in Maryland to discuss the safety and efficacy of OTC cough and cold medicines for children. The panels, in a majority vote of 13-nine, voted to recommend to FDA that cough and cold active ingredients should no longer be available for use in children under six-years-old.

Harm from OTC cough and cold medicines is very rare and, when it does occur, is almost always the result of misuse (significant overdose or accidental swallowing due to medicine not being properly stored and secured).
• As with all medicines, dosing instructions for all over-the-counter remedies must be read and followed carefully. It is important to remember that any medicine can cause harm if taken or used improperly.
• If a parent or other caregiver has any questions about a child’s healthcare, they should contact a healthcare professional for assistance.
• Safe use and safekeeping are extremely important. Giving medicine according to label directions is part of the solution; storing it out of the sight and reach of children is part of it, as well. More tips are available online.
The makers of over-the-counter cough and cold medicines want to ensure that parents and caregivers understand when and how to use these medicines safely.

Hey, I know, instead of recommending on your package that I “Consult Physician” for recommended dosage for kids under the age of two… at 1-fucking-30 in the morning when my child is in need of some relief, why don’t you just put. the. dosage. on. the. fucking. label.

It’s an over the counter drug. If you don’t trust me to dose correctly want me to “consult my physician” why don’t you make it a prescription drug?

So at 1-fucking-30 in the morning my husband looks at me and says:
“how much should I give him?”

“What does that label say?” I ask, guessing I already knew the answer.

“Under 2, Consult Physician” apparently, at 1-fucking-30 in the morning, I look like a physician.

“How much does it say for a two year old?”

“1 ml”

“Give him half that.”

Yep, it was a judgment call, but as parents don’t we do that all the time?

So now, since big rich drug companies won’t change the labeling, the FDA has recommended that my son suffer through Michigan cold and flu seasons for the NEXT 4 ½ years, until he turns “six years old”, before I can give him something to help alleviate his stuffy nose and coughing.

Very Important Information

Important information you need to know about infants’ and children’s cough and cold medicines.

Tylenol has recalled all sorts of products this week. Apparently there is some confusion about dosages between their regular formula and their concentrated formulas.

I have two questions:

Why would you concentrate an infant formula?

Why don’t you just put the damn dosage recommendations on the fucking box?

The second one really frosts my cookie. As a first time Mom, I’m already panicky enough when my child gets sick. Ok, so you tell me to consult my doctor, which I do (luckily I am one of the fortunate people in America that has a decent Health Care Plan). My OLD pediatrician used to rattle of amounts when I asked her about dosages. How in the hell am I supposed to remember what she said without writing it down? And if I am lucky enough to remember (or write down) the numbers, how come they don’t coincide with the numbers on the dropper? Did she say ml’s or oz’s? Gee, I wonder how people get confused?

My new pediatrician has given me a Tylenol sponsored chart with dosage info on it. It hangs in the bathroom, inside the cabinet door. I always know where it is and it’s easy enough for someone who may be watching my son to find it.

Who really fuels this fire?

One of the many stories.

The six black teens were charged a few months after three white teens were accused of hanging nooses in a tree on their high school grounds. The white teens were suspended from school but weren’t prosecuted. Five of the black teens were initially charged with attempted murder. That charge was reduced to battery for all but one, who has yet to be arraigned; the sixth was charged as a juvenile.

The beating victim, Justin Barker, was knocked unconscious, his face badly swollen and bloodied, though he was able to attend a school function later that night.

District Attorney Reed Walters stressed on Wednesday that race had nothing to do with the charges in Jena.

Walters said he didn’t charge the white students accused of hanging the nooses because he could find no Louisiana law under which they could be charged. In the beating case, he said, four of the defendants were of adult age under Louisiana law and the only juvenile charged as an adult, Mychal Bell, had a prior criminal record.

Sharpton said Bell, whom he spoke with Wednesday, was heartened by the show of support.

“He doesn’t want anything done that would disparage his name — no violence, not even a negative word,” Sharpton said.

Disparage his name??? Perhaps he should have thought about that before he (allegedly) participated in beating another human being.
